Cat6 vs Cat6A vs Fiber: Choosing Cable for a Reston Office

What Cat6, Cat6A and fiber actually do, where each belongs in an office, the power over Ethernet heat problem that changes the answer more often than bandwidth, and the mixed build most Reston offices land on.

Every cabling quote for a Reston office eventually reaches the same fork. Cat6, Cat6A, or fiber, and the contractor usually has an opinion they are ready to defend.
The honest answer is that all three are correct for different parts of the same building, and the expensive mistake is applying one of them everywhere.
Here is how the decision actually breaks down: what each one does, where the limits bite, and what changes the answer for a specific space.
The Specifications, Briefly
These numbers are the whole argument, so it is worth having them straight.
Cat5e
100 MHz bandwidth, rated for 1 Gbps to 100 metres. Still perfectly functional for gigabit to a desk. Installing it new in 2026 is hard to justify, because the cable is a small fraction of job cost and you are capping the run for its entire life to save very little.
Cat6
250 MHz. Handles 1 Gbps to the full 100 metre channel, and 10 Gbps only to about 55 metres, less in dense bundles where alien crosstalk becomes the limiting factor. For most offices running gigabit to the desk, Cat6 is genuinely sufficient.
Cat6A
500 MHz, and rated for 10 Gbps across the full 100 metre channel. Thicker, stiffer, harder to pull, more expensive to terminate. It is the current default for new commercial installation where the building owner expects the cable to outlast several equipment refreshes.
Fiber
Effectively unlimited bandwidth over the distances any office cares about, immune to electrical interference, and not distance limited the way copper is. It carries no power, which is the reason it does not go to the desk in most buildings.
Where Each One Belongs
To the desk
Cat6 or Cat6A. This is the real decision and it is mostly about time horizon. If you hold a three year lease in a space you will likely leave, Cat6 is a defensible economy. If you own the building or expect to stay, Cat6A costs more once and removes a limitation you would otherwise inherit.
To wireless access points
Cat6A, and this is the case where the argument is strongest. Modern access points can saturate a gigabit link, they are frequently placed at awkward distances from the rack, and they draw meaningful power. Cabling access points with the better category is cheap insurance against replacing exactly those runs first.
Between floors or buildings
Fiber. Copper backbone between floors is distance limited and vulnerable to the ground potential differences you get between separate electrical panels. Fiber sidesteps both problems entirely.
To cameras, door controllers, and sensors
Cat6 is normally fine. These devices are low bandwidth. Distance and power draw matter more than category here.
The Power Over Ethernet Problem Nobody Mentions
This is the part that changes the answer more often than bandwidth does.
Power over Ethernet has grown in stages. The original 802.3af standard delivered about 15 watts, 802.3at raised that to about 30, and 802.3bt reaches 60 and 90 watts depending on type. Modern access points, pan tilt zoom cameras, and powered displays all draw from the upper end.
Pushing that much current through a bundle of cables generates heat, and heat raises insertion loss, and higher insertion loss shortens your usable distance. A bundle of a hundred cables in a tight tray behaves differently from six cables in open air.
Cat6A handles this better than Cat6 because the larger conductor carries current with less resistance and the construction dissipates heat more effectively. If you are deploying high power devices across a lot of runs, this argument alone often decides it.
What Actually Changes the Answer
Distance. Measure the longest run during the walkthrough, not the average. If anything approaches 55 metres and you want 10 gigabit at some point, Cat6 stops being an option for those runs.
Lease length. Cable is a capital improvement you may not take with you. A short lease genuinely changes the maths.
Bundle density. Dense bundles in conduit or tray suffer more from alien crosstalk and heat than loose runs in an open ceiling.
What is at the other end. Gigabit switches today do not mean gigabit switches in eight years.
Building age. Older Reston office stock can have pathway constraints that make pulling stiff Cat6A genuinely difficult, which shows up as labour cost.
The Approach Most Offices Land On
A mixed build, which sounds like a compromise and is actually just correct.
Fiber for backbone between floors and telecom rooms. Cat6A to wireless access points and to any location where 10 gigabit is plausible. Cat6 to standard desks and to low bandwidth devices like cameras and door hardware. A spare drop at every location regardless of category, because the incremental cost is small.
Getting this specified correctly before quotes go out is what makes proposals comparable. It is also the main thing separating installers worth hiring from the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Cat6A worth the extra cost?
For access points and for any run you expect to outlive two equipment refreshes, yes. For standard desk drops in a short lease, Cat6 is defensible. The premium is mostly labour rather than material.
Can I mix categories in one building?
Yes, and most well specified buildings do. Category is a per run decision. The only requirement is labelling and documentation good enough that whoever works on it next knows what is where.
What about Cat7 or Cat8?
Cat8 is a real standard aimed at short data centre runs, typically 30 metres or less, and it is not intended for general office horizontal cabling. Cat7 was never adopted in the same way in North America. If a contractor proposes either for desk drops, ask why.
Does shielded cable help?
Sometimes, and it introduces its own requirements. Shielded systems need proper bonding and grounding end to end, and a shielded system grounded incorrectly performs worse than a good unshielded one. Unless you have a specific interference problem, unshielded is usually the right call in an office.
How do I know what was actually installed?
The certification reports and as built documentation. If you do not have them from the last installation, you do not really know what is in your walls, and that is worth fixing at the next opportunity.

The decision is not Cat6 versus Cat6A as a building wide choice. It is which runs need which, decided from measured distances and the devices going on the end.
